On knowing what you do best, building a career around it, and helping others do the same — Ryan Moser · October 22, 2026

ThredUp: early discovery on the left, scaled garment automation on the right

I used to struggle to explain what I did for a living. I’d spent more than a decade at ThredUp, working across different functions and taking on increasingly large responsibilities. I could describe what I’d accomplished, but I had a harder time articulating what connected all those experiences and why, at the apparent pinnacle of my career, I’d become so unhappy.

Making sense of my experience led me to a framework built around three archetypes that describe the kind of work people do best. I developed it to understand myself, but I’ve since found it useful for thinking about how people can grow without abandoning their strengths, why talented people sometimes struggle, and how to build organizations that bring out the best in people.
