AI has changed the texture of software development.

A developer can now ask for code, explanations, examples, tests, refactoring ideas, design alternatives, documentation, and debugging help, and get something plausible in seconds. That is not a small change. It is real leverage.

But leverage is not the same as agency.

Leverage helps us do more. Agency helps us act with understanding, judgment, and responsibility.

That distinction matters because software development is not merely the act of producing code. Code is the artifact, but the deeper work is understanding the problem, shaping the model, choosing tradeoffs, testing assumptions, protecting meaning, and preserving the ability to change the system later.

AI can help with all of that. It can also get in the way of all of that if we use it carelessly.
