PhD Advice in the Age of AI

September 2026

I received a lot of comments from students asking the same question, so I decided this should be my first blog post.

This is a very important question, and one I find myself thinking about for long periods of time as a senior PhD scholar. And I think this is true no matter where you're living or pursuing your PhD, especially in the theoretical sciences.

My advice would be two-part:

a. Stay abreast. What I mean by that is: in this time of rapid change, staying informed can be quite challenging and overwhelming, but it is extremely important if you want to navigate the journey ahead of you. Some practical ways of doing so are to read articles coming out of the frontier labs and follow people who are actively thinking about how AI is changing science and academia. Two particularly useful blogs, in my opinion, are Tao's blog and Scott Aaronson's blog (especially now that they're featuring guest posts). They often capture important discussions happening within the community and contain a lot of useful information.
