Principles for a new utopianism

Someone once said that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.1We might add that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of poverty, privation, or war. Visions of apocalypse seem to come easier than visions of utopia.

This is particularly true of mainstream Western visions of life with AGI: apocalypse predominates.2We know the plot from the countless Hollywood movies: awakening, uprising and obliteration; a few plucky humans left in an inhuman wasteland, hunted by the machines. No wonder the number of Americans who say they are more concerned than excited about AI has now tipped into the majority.3
