Rosettes and Other Hidden Traces of Hamburg’s Tram

When I was writing about the Fuhle, I came across a small detail: in 1895, the first tram line in Hamburg built for electric operation from the start ran along Fuhlsbüttler Straße. I knew that Hamburg once had trams, but I never knew much about them. Berlin and Munich still have tram networks, so why is Hamburg the largest city in Germany without one?

Digging deeper, I realised the network was much bigger than I thought. In 1954, Hamburg’s trams carried about 251 million passengers. To put that into perspective, all Hochbahn buses together carried 261 million passengers in 2025, and the U-Bahn 291 million. The network was so big that, almost 50 years after the last tram ran in 1978, its traces are still around us.
