Academics have a duty to defend open knowledge systems like Wikipedia

Despite being the most widely consulted reference work ever created Wikipedia faces existential challenges from generative AI companies whose products divert traffic away from it. Helen Choi argues academics, by virtue of their responsibilities as researchers and teachers in higher education, have an ethical duty to defend and support open knowledge communities such as Wikipedia.

When people use AI products like Google’s Gemini or ChatGPT, they are treated to immediate answers. Sometimes such answers include links to Wikipedia. However, most users of AI products do not click the links to Wikipedia, choosing instead to accept machine-generated outputs without further verification. If this practice continues, readership on Wikipedia will continue to decline.
