Academics have a duty to defend open knowledge systems like Wikipedia

Helen Choi of the University of Southern California argues that generative AI products are diverting readers from Wikipedia and misappropriating volunteers' work, threatening the community that sustains it. She contends academics, as researchers and teachers, have an ethical duty to defend open knowledge communities, and that universities should recognise and resource contributions to Wikipedia.
